City and Guilds Courses 2381 - 2391 available
Are You Part P Approved?
Are you a plumber, kitchen fitter, bathroom installer or
general builder who is fed up waiting for an electrician to certify your
work?
If so, then we can provide a nationally accredited course which will
provide you with the qualification required to apply for a Part P Domestic
Installers Certification.
What is Part P?
From 1 January 2005 all electrical work carried out in domestic dwellings
is required to comply with the Part P requirements of the Building
Regulations and is to have been carried out by persons who are competent
to do the work.
Small jobs where replacement is on a like for like basis, such as
replacing a socket-outlet or a light switch on an existing circuit, will
not need to be notified to building control (although there are exceptions
for high risk areas such as kitchens, bathrooms, gardens and special
installations).
All work that involves adding a new circuit or work within a special
location will need to be either notified to building control, (who will
then inspect the work), or be carried out by a competent person who is
registered with the Part P Self-Certification Scheme.
Persons registered with the Part P Self-Certification Schemes will be
qualified contractors with the ability to thoroughly check a circuit for
safety. They are required to issue an Electrical Installation Certificate
that complies with Building Regulation requirements when the work has been
completed.
Who requires Part P?
Part P of the Building Regulations is aimed at people / businesses who
regularly carry out electrical work in support of their main trade. This
mainly consists of Kitchen Fitters, Bathroom Fitters, Plumbers, Carpenters
& Builders, but also extends to anyone carrying out electrical work in a
dwelling, which is classed as being notifiable to Building Control.
What if I don't have Part P?
If you are not registered as a Part P approved person with one of the 5
Governing Bodies then all your work needs to be notified to the local
Building Control Officer. He will inspect your work, or appoint a
qualified agent to carry out the inspection at 1st and 2nd fix stages. In
practice this option is going to be both time consuming and costly as the
average costs vary from £100 - £200 per inspection.
