RAF AIR COMMAND

 

 NO 1 GROUP


HQ No 1 Group is responsible for all, front line combat aircraft. No 1 Group squadrons and units are involved in the whole range of military operations ranging from UK Homeland Defence to operations in Afghanistan and Iraq. No 1 Group has around 12,000 personnel under command who operate from 8 major flying stations. The group has 20 squadrons and one support unit under command including the Joint Force Harrier (JFH).

In the longer term HQ Air Command will develop a Joint Combat Aircraft capability for land and carrier-borne operations to cater for future F-35 Lightning (formerly Joint Strike Fighter) operations.

No 1 Group units include the following:

5 x Tornado F3 Squadrons
8 x Tornado GR4/4A Squadrons
4 x Eurofighter Typhoon Squadrons
5 x Harrier Squadrons (includes 2 x Royal Navy Squadrons under JFH)
1 x Hawk Squadron

No 1 Group also commands the RAF Unit Goose Bay (Labrador - Canada) which provides fast jet low flying training.
