TERRAM LTD

Terram Specialist Manufacturer of Geotextiles and Geosynthetics

Terram is a specialist manufacturer of geotextiles and other geosynthetics used for a variety of applications including separation, filtration, drainage, erosion control and increasingly in Specialist Industrial uses.

Geotextiles make it possible to treat soil filtration and drainage as two entirely separate issues. In geotextile-wrapped drains, the fabric (specified according to its hydraulic properties) generates a ‘filter zone’ within the soil that lays adjacent to the drain. This allows the aggregate to function purely as the drainage medium.

A pavement is any paved area such as a road, runway, footpath, hard standing or loading area and is commonly finished with a hard surface such as block paving, asphalt or concrete. However, a pavement can also be left without a hard surface. These are typically referred to as unpaved roads.

River and canal banks are subject to wave action, i.e. reversing flow conditions. It is this dynamic erosive force that undermines bank stability and affects channel flow and/or navigability.

Terram is a Geosynthetics company dedicated to the supply of geosynthetic materials to the worldwide construction industry. Since the company's inception in the late 1960's as part of ICI Fibres, the Terram range of products has grown to meet the demands of the civil engineering industry.

Terram is a member of BBA Fiberweb, one of the world's leading suppliers of nonwoven materials. Terram's focus is in the supply of:

  • Geotextiles for road and rail construction

  • High strength geogrids for soil stabilisation

  • Drainage composites for structural drainage systems

The Terram production plant is located in the UK and supports sales offices in Germany, France, Spain and Hong Kong, and supplies distributors in over 60 countries. Terram's product supply is complemented by production from its sister companies in North and South America.

CIVIL ENGINEERING

Pavements

Terram has a full range of geotextiles and geogrids for use in unpaved roads, permanent paved roads and for pavement refurbishment works.

Erosion Control

Riverbanks and coastlines can be undermined and damaged by wave or tidal action. The defensive elements that require protection are:

  • The in-situ soil

  • The filter unit protecting the soil

  • The rock armour protecting the filter

The hydraulic and filtration properties of geotextiles allows them to be used in place of some of the traditional filter layers. Consequently, a single layer of geotextile fabric can replace a succession of stone filter layers. A single bedding layer of stone is laid on the geotextile, to carry the rocks that resist the movements caused by the hydraulic forces.

Filtration

Because excess water reduces the shear strength of soil - the primary factor in a soil’s load-bearing capacity - drainage systems must be installed to remove excess water. But any drainage system has to be protected against entry of fines from the soil by a suitable filter. If not, the system may become contaminated by particles.

Drainage

Drainage composites are designed for a variety of applications including vertical drainage behind structures. The composite consists of a spacer sandwiched between two geotextiles. This construction combines the dual functions of filtration and drainage in a single flexible sheet.

RAILWAYS

Terram geosynthetics have been successfully used within the rail industry for at least 25 years. Terram nonwoven geotextiles are extensively used for separation of the track ballast from the sub-grade and for drainage purposes at the track edge. Heavy weight Terram 4000 has been used for many years in combination with a sand layer to reduce contamination of the track ballast caused by ‘pumping’.

OIL AND GAS

Terram is increasingly being used in major Oil and Gas projects throughout the world.

They have engineered specific products to deal with various local conditions , including products for Frost Heave, and Salt protection, and Geocells for evaporation ponds for example.

TECHNICAL TEXTILES

Melfab, Terram's brand name for the nonwoven range of products that they manufacture for 'Industrial' and technical textiles uses, is extremely versatile and is used in a wide range of applications. In addition to this range we also manufacture 'bespoke' laminated and composite products. Terram manufacture coloured textiles for camouflage and shrouding and can also supply radar detectable fabrics.
