RAF Personnel and Training Command - Operational Conversion Unit

RAF AIR COMMAND

OPERATIONAL CONVERSION UNIT (OCU)

The RAF has a number of OCU's designed to train pilots for front-line squadron service as follows:

RAF Operational Conversion Units (OCUs) (As at 1 April 2006)

15 (R) Sqn 26 x Tornado GR4 RAF Lossiemouth
20 (R) Sqn 9 x Harrier GR7/7A/9/9A RAF Wittering
  4 x Harrier T10/T12
29 Sqn 12e x Typhoon RAF Coningsby (Typhoon OCU)
42 (R) Sqn 3 x Nimrod MR2 RAF Kinloss
56 (R) Sqn 20 x Tornado F3 RAF Leuchars
203 (R) Sqn 3 x Sea King HAR3/3A RAF St Mawgan

Note. The (R) in a squadron designation represents a training unit/reserve squadron. In the majority of cases this reserve squadron is the Operational Conversion Unit (OCU) for the particular aircraft type and the reserve squadron has a mobilisation role.

The organisation of an OCU is obviously tailored to fit the size of the aircraft fleet being supported. As an example, we believe that No 29 Reserve Sqn (Tornado F3 OCU) is organised along the following lines.

A and B Flights generally provide flying training with about 15-18 x staff crews and about 12 x student crews. C Flight is a standards flight training instructors, and D Flight provides simulators and a dome air combat trainer.
