The role of 2 Group
is to provide the operational ‘reach’ and the associated support to
UK operations world-wide from its Headquarters at High Wycombe.
No 2 Group provides the RAF with Air Transport and Air-to-Air
Refuelling (AT/AAR), Force Protection and ISTAR (Intelligence
Surveillance, Targeting and Reconnaissance). The Group operates from
15 flying stations utilising 11 types of aircraft in 21 different
squadrons. Aircraft and ground stations operate a large array of
defensive and offensive systems.
In the longer term we would expect to see No 2 Group operating the
A400M transport aircraft following its introduction into service
post 2011, the Future Strategic Tanker Aircraft (FSTA) post 2011 and the Nimrod MRA4 post 2012. The A400M will replace
the Hercules C-130K leaving just the C-130J in service.
No 2 Group is also responsible for Force Protection (FP) and units
under command include the RAF Regiment, RAF Police and the Joint
CBRN Regiment at RAF Honington.
