The role of
the Defence Information Infrastructure Integrated Project Team (DII IPT)
is to ensure delivery and support of a single information infrastructure
to serve defence, replacing separate or TLB-specific systems currently
in use.
MISSION
To deliver to defence a secure and coherent information infrastructure
at minimum whole-life cost whilst maintaining continuity of service.
VISION
One information infrastructure
The provision of one information infrastructure is the responsibility of
the IPT’s delivery partner, ATLAS, a consortium of companies comprising
EDS as the prime contractor, with Fujitsu, General Dynamics, EADS and
LogicaCMG as key sub-contractors. They will assume control of existing
individual systems and progressively replace them with the new
infrastructure. This will provide a standard, consistent platform for
defence applications and a more effective environment for the sharing of
information and transmission of messages.
DII(F) is one of the largest information infrastructure programmes in
Europe. It will provide a computing infrastructure and services that
will enable sharing of information and collaborative working to a
variety of groups and individuals including those that currently have
limited or no connectivity. Ultimately it will provide around 300,000
user accounts on approximately 150,000 terminals across about 2,000 MoD
sites worldwide.
Not only does the delivery of DII capability represent a major output in
its own right, it also plays a significant part in the delivery of, and
as a catalyst for, the Defence Change Programme. DII will be central to
transforming the capability of the Armed Forces by providing Network
Enabled Capability through a single network of information. It will
extend into the operational arena, interface with battlespace systems
and improve shared information between headquarters, battlefield support
and the front line, allowing greater interoperability between the MoD
and its allies.
DII, is being delivered in Increments to provide packages of work that
are managerially and financially coherent. Increment 1 will provide
DII(F) to around 70,000 desktops and 200,000 user accounts, focusing on
Restricted and Secret DII(F) services in fixed locations. Increment 2
looks at Deployed services and services to the Above Secret environment.
The service ranges geographically from the office environment in
Whitehall to forward deployed Headquarters anywhere in the world. In
service management terms it ranges from 24/7 cover to ordinary office
hours support.
