Principles and Sizing of
Earthing and Bonding
The objectives of the course are to ensure that
delegates are: fully conversant with the requirements of the
Standard; understand the associated theory to enable a
complete design to be produced compliant with the standard;
are able to completely size and define a full working
installation compliant with the standard.
This course will cover:
-
Earthing systems defined in BS 7671 - TNS, TN-C-S
and TT
-
Definitions and descriptions
-
Principles of Earthing and automatic disconnection
-
Definitions and practical sizing of:
- Earthing conductor
- Circuit protective conductors
- Bonding conductors
- Supplementary bonding conductors

Electrical Basics Course
This two day course is intended to provide an understanding of terminology,
units of measurement and basic electrical theory. It will be of particular
benefit to those of a non-electrical background or with limited electrical
knowledge. It will also serve as a refresher for those whose knowledge has
perhaps got a little rusty with passing time.
The course is intended primarily as a foundation to enable participants to
gain more benefit from attendance at a subsequent technical course, in
particular the Portable Appliance Testing, Testing of Electrical Installations
and Inspection, Testing and Certification of Electrical Installations courses.
A 10% discount will be given on any of the above courses when booked in
conjunction with this Basic Electrical Course.
The course covers:
-
Basic parameters and units of measurement
-
Types of electric current
-
Electrical power and energy
-
The basic electric circuit
-
Insulation and continuity resistance
-
Electrical protection and calculation of protective device ratings
-
The principles of earthing
-
Switching and isolation of electrical equipment
-
Plug connections and polarity
-
The use of extension leads
-
Examples of electrical equipment hazards
Some practical work is included.

Electrical Maintenance
This course is aimed at management and supervisory staff taking on
responsibilities for the maintenance of electrical systems, installations,
plant and equipment. The course should also benefit general maintenance and
plant managers, estate managers and mechanical and electrical contractors. For
those already engaged in handling Electrical Maintenance the course will
provide a valuable refresher and a basis for auditing present company
arrangements.
Advanced maintenance techniques such as reliability centred maintenance (RCM)
are outside the scope of the course.
Topics include:
-
Need for maintenance, types and strategy, legal aspects
-
Transformers and switchgear
-
Low voltage electrical installations and equipment
-
Lightning protection systems
-
Lighting installations
-
Fire detection and alarm systems
-
Standby power supplies
-

Testing of Electrical Installations
This one-day short course is an introduction to testing to BS 7671: 2008
Requirements for Electrical Installations (IEE Wiring Regulations Seventeenth
Edition) and is particularly suitable for those who lack practical experience
or require a refresher. The course combines formal teaching with "hands-on"
practical sessions and assumes a basic understanding of BS 7671 technical
requirements.
A series of test boards embrace the following tests:
-
Continuity of protective conductors
-
Ring circuit continuity
-
Insulation resistance and polarity
-
Live polarity, earth loop impedance, prospective fault current and RCD
operation
Delegates will be able to practise these tests for themselves.
Ideally, delegates should have personal copies of BS 7671: 2008 and IEE
Guidance Note 3 Inspection & Testing as these are referenced throughout the
course.
