Mastiff 2 which replaced the earlier Mastiff 1 (Ridgeback) is a heavily armoured, wheeled , troop carrying vehicle suitable for road patrols and convoys and is the newest delivery in a range of protected patrol vehicles being used for operations.

 

 


Manufactured by the US Company Force Protection Inc (where it is named Cougar) Mastiff 2 is a 6 x 6 wheel-drive patrol vehicle which carries six people, plus two crew. It has a maximum speed of 90 km/h and can be armed with a machine gun, 50 mm canon or 40 mm automatic grenade launcher.

The UK MoD purchased some 108 vehicles in an original order worth approximately US$70.1 million (£35 million) and these vehicles were deployed in Iraq during December 2006. During October 2007 the MoD announced the purchase of another 140 Mastiff in a contract worth around £100 million.
