Allied Command Europe Mobile Force Land AMF(L) Contingent

The UK’s pool of Joint Rapid Reaction Forces cover all of the military tasks for which there is a requirement to provide forces at short notice. This includes the UK’s commitment to NATO's Allied Command Europe (ACE) through the UK contribution to the ACE Rapid Reaction Corps and the ACE Mobile Force (Land) or AMF(L).

The first echelon is always held at very high readiness for 'early entry operations' - for example to secure a landing point and possibly to provide an initial military capability. Its second echelon will provide follow-up forces normally held at slightly longer readiness.

The first echelon land element would be able to provide lead battle groups of land and amphibious forces (including if required an armoured battle group), and a special forces component. A fully equipped rapidly deployable Joint Task Force HQ exists to command these initial forces and be able to expand to command a larger force if required.

For AMF(L) land operations the second echelon force could consist of a brigade-sized force. This could range from a light, commando or airmobile brigade or if required an armoured brigade.

During a recent AMF(L) exercise in Norway the UK contribution included:

1 x Infantry Battalion
1 x Armoured Squadron
1 x STA Battery
1 x Artillery Battery
1 x Signals Squadron
1 x Engineer Field Troop
1 x Army Air Corps Flight
1 x Transport Squadron
1 x Ordnance Company
1 x REME Workshop,
1 x Medical Detachment and an Intelligence Section.

The overall personnel total was probably in the region of 1,450 personnel.
