STATISTICS

BRITISH ARMY MAJOR UNITS

"Nothing is so good for the morale of the troops, as occasionally to see a dead general". Field Marshal Slim 1891-1970

LIST OF UNITS OF THE REGULAR ARMY (SITUATION AT 1 JANUARY 2007)

THE CAVALRY

Apart from the Royal Tank Regiment, which was formed in the First World War with the specific task of fighting in armoured vehicles, armoured forces (main battle tank and force reconnaissance) in the British Army are provided by the regiments which formed the cavalry element of the pre mechanised era. In January 2006 there were 11 x regular armoured regiments and 4 TA Yeomanry Regiments. One of these regiments forms The Household Cavalry and the remaining regiments are known collectively as The Royal Armoured Corps (RAC).

Following FAS changes we believe that the 11 regular field force units of the RAC will be deployed as follows:

In Germany. Three Armoured Regiments and one Force Reconnaissance (FR) Regiment.

In the UK. Two Armoured Regiments, four FR Regiments and the Joint NBC Regiment.

Note: The Household Cavalry Mounted Regiment is permanently stationed in London. The Territorial Army has four Yeomanry Regiments. These units are national defence regiments with a reconnaissance role.

In January 2006 the personnel strength of the The Household Cavalry/ Royal Armoured Corps was 5,560

The Cavalry consists of 11 armoured regiments and one mounted ceremonial regiment as follows:
